The lock complex in Eefde has been expanded with a second lock chamber. The lock cost more than 80 million euros and is a wonderful place to have a look. The ultramodern new lock chamber ensures that skippers do not have to wait as long. This considerable investment will enable companies to grow further along the Twente Canal, as more and larger shafts can enter.
The complex is a national monument that has existed since 1933. Rijkswaterstaat uses the lock for water management and shipping traffic. The lock was thoroughly renovated between 2003 and 2006 and a new gully has been added since April 2020. The original lock is now called 'Zuidersluis' and the new lock is called 'Noordersluis'.
