Surrounded by pleasant terraces and catering establishments, in the heart of the Drenthe village of Odoorn stands the Dutch Reformed Church. The choir dates from the 12th century and is beautiful to see.
The present church with its slender tower dates from 1899 but the church was built on ancient wall remains and foundations from the 12th century. The walls of the narrow rectangular choir are built up to a height of 3.75 metres from large, edged boulders. The boulders, taken from dolmens, were often used in the
Middle Ages, they were often used to build churches and walls. The upper wall sections are made of brick. On many boulders, traces of round drill holes can be seen along the joint edges. At that time, wooden wedges were driven into these to split the large
boulders.
Every other week, the church is used to hold a service in.
