Duivenvoorde was originally a 13th-century residential tower with a moat around it. Thorough renovations in 1631 and 1717 gave the castle its current look. Since then, it was given the function of a country estate where wealthy noble families escaped city life during the summer months.
In 1960, the castle and the surrounding estate (total 260 hectares) were transferred to a foundation. The castle, with authentic interiors from the 17th - 19th centuries, has been open to the public as a museum from then on. Duivenvoorde is considered one of the oldest castles in South Holland and it has a unique collection of family portraits, silver objects, Delftware and porcelain.
