In the 9th century there was already a fortified house on the site of the castle, known as Villa Dorenburc. From this, a modest castle emerged in the 13th century. Over the centuries, it was expanded further and further into the main castle that can still be seen today. In the 15th century, the outer bailey was built. The outer bailey contains living quarters, a chapel and a farm. The latter is unique for a Dutch castle.
Doornenburg Castle remained inhabited until the 19th century. It then fell into disrepair. In 1936, the Foundation for the Preservation of Doornenburg was established, which had the castle restored from 1937 onwards. The restoration was completed in 1941, but the foundation was not able to enjoy it for long. In the last six months of the Second World War, there was heavy fighting in the Betuwe, which had become the front line. The castle housed the German headquarters. At the end of the Second World War, the castle was almost completely destroyed by a British bombing raid.
From 1947 to 1968, the castle was completely rebuilt to its current state and became a well-known castle through the television series Floris in the 1960s. The main castle now houses a museum about the castle. In the Herberg, you can get a bite to eat and a drink. There is also a Bed & Breakfast in the castle.
