Dolmens are grave monuments from prehistoric times. They are made of huge boulders shifted from Scandinavia to our country during the ice age. The tombs probably served not only as burial places but ceremonies also took place around them. The dead were given grave goods, all the things they might need in earthly life on their journey to the afterlife. The pottery jars found were filled with food and jewellery, arrowheads and flints have also been found
On the Hunebedweg near Noord-Sleen you will find D50, which forms a pair with D51. During research and restoration in 1962, van Giffen noted that the D51 was "strongly sodden". The D50 was (and still is) largely intact.
Besides the almost complete ring of 24 large coronary stones, it still has 7 of the original 8 capstones, 16 supporting stones and 2 closing stones. The hunebed is 17 metres long and almost 4.5 metres wide. The cellar contents have never been scientifically examined.
