Dolmen D5 in Zeijen is hidden in a hole opposite the Zeijerstrubben nature reserve, about 100 metres from the road between Zeijen and Peest. Because of this location, the dolmen is not directly visible, but the four capstones protrude above the ground and give a glimpse of the original cap mound.
The dolmen was discovered and partly excavated in 1833; many of the side stones and keystones are still buried under the sand. Thanks to the efforts of Mr Lucas Oldenhuis Gratama, a prominent Drenthe administrator and champion of archaeological preservation, the dolmen was saved from the boulder trade in 1857 and transferred to the province for just 40 guilders.
The entrance to the hunebed site is marked by boulders and a name plaque. You will also see an original ‘Van Giffen’ hand sign along the road, reminding you of the archaeological significance of this site.
