If you cycle through Drenthe, you will see hunebeds, the mysterious treasures of Drenthe's past. They were built some 4400 years before Christ by the Funnel Beaker people, the earliest inhabitants of this area. These ancient monuments were first thoroughly studied by Professor Albert Egges van Giffen, whose fascination with these stone wonders laid the foundation for our understanding of their history and significance.

In the province of Drenthe, you can still find 52 hunebeds, which the professor numbered from D1 to D54. (D33 was later demolished and D48 turned out not to be a hunebed after all.) Hunebed D2 is located between Norg and Westervelde and was reported by Van Giffen in 1925 as being "in very battered condition". It is a small hunebed with originally only four capstones. Hunebed D2 was restored in 1928, 1952 and 1965, but the basement contents have never been examined and may therefore still be intact.
