Within the fortifications of the Hanseatic city of Doesburg stands a unique little factory: the Doesburgsche Mustard Factory. In 1974 it was expanded with a museum. As early as 1457 the citizen of Doesburg, Gosen Momme, was making mustard in Doesburg. This is evident from the register of penal cases. A sign of the current mustard factory can be found for the first time in an entry from 1806. Jacobus Egelbertus Jacob is recorded there as a "mustard producer". He made the mustard with a hand mill.
The factory was taken over several times by other owners, the hand mill was replaced by a mill running on a gas engine, which was then replaced by an electric motor. But the unique recipe of the "Van Ouds Alom Bekende Doesburgsche Mosterd" has always been preserved.
In the museum, you can admire the old mills and their equipment. You can also see how, nowadays, the old-fashioned farm mustard is made.
