The canal between which the Dieversluis lies was dug between 1767 and 1780 and is called the Drentsche Hoofdvaart. In the 19th century, the canal was used to transport peat from the surrounding peat bogs. Building materials and food, such as potatoes, flour, and sugar beets, were also transported by water until well into the 20th century. In the meantime, the canal has been taken over by pleasure boaters, which certainly creates a pleasant atmosphere in the summer. The canal still has an important function for the drainage of the higher-lying central part of Drenthe. The many locks spread along the length of the canal make it possible to manage the drainage despite the height differences.
