High in the Saint John’s tower the church bells were hung. As soon as the bells rang, a heavenly sound could be heard in the surroundings. The priest, who had the bells cast for the church tower, was warned: "Don’t forget to consecrate the bells!" Yet in his enthusiasm he had gone too fast and had forgotten the smallest bell. In the dead of Christmas night, the devil took hold of the 'Duvelsklökske', after which the church bell disappeared without a trace.
This legend has been passed down for centuries from generation to generation by the local residents. The artwork, which depicts the devil, was made by Mirjam Verheijen and has stood on the church square in Sambeek since 2006.
