At Den Ezel, you can see both a National Border Post (number 174) and an Admiralty Post (customs post). The border crossing was a well-known passage among smugglers.
You can also see a reconstruction of Den Doodendraad here, a reminder of the First World War. During this war, the Netherlands was neutral and thus a safe haven, but Belgium was occupied by the Germans. To make sure that no spies, resistance fighters, refugees and smugglers could cross the border, the Germans laid a long wire fence on the border with 2000 volts of electricity on it: the Death Wire.
