Hidden in the woods of the Veluwe lies nature reserve De Motketel, the heart of the Vaassense Beken. This is where the ice-cold groundwater bubbles up, to discharge into so-called 'spring heads'. From these spring heads, the no fewer than twenty springs and brooks in this unique landscape originated. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the springs were further excavated so that water mills could be driven for industry in and around Vaassen.
The area can be visited all year round and in spring offers a special spectacle with the spawning brook lampreys. The springscape in De Motketel is unique in Europe and therefore ranks high in the top 100 of Historical Geography Netherlands.
