When chairman of Feijenoord Leen van Zandvliet dreamt of the ideal football stadium in 1931, he drew his dream on a notepad. With that notepad, he went to the architects Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. After a study trip to Britain, they came up with a design according to Rotterdam standards: simplicity, businesslike and no fuss.
Thanks in part to Van Zandvliet's enthusiasm, the stadium was built in less than a year. Rotterdam council was a little slower: there were no feeder roads yet. Finally, the first match is played on 27 March 1937.
