De Kubus is the centre for art and culture in Lelystad. It is a multifunctional building: they are a theatre, concert hall, open stage and exhibition space all in one. But they also offer a variety of courses and workshops, all related to art and culture, of course.
The building in which De Kubus (The Cube) is housed is just as special. Architect Wim Davidse developed De Kubus from one basic unit: the large hall. Around this core are four almost identical rooms, each with a round staircase. The music rooms can be recognised by the fact that they have no shared walls, which reduces noise pollution. The visual arts studios can be recognised by the large areas of glass in the corridors. The grey concrete stones of the concrete skeleton have been left visible. All these elements make De Kubus a chain of cubes. So it is not surprising that the building is called The Cube!
In 2006, De Kubus won the Lelystad Architecture Prize and the building has been a municipal monument since 2020.
