In the 17th century, the textile industry provided financial security for the residents of Amersfoort. The first cotton printery in Europe was established in this city. Cotton sheets and cloths were printed with handmade wooden stamps. Get to know this centuries-old craft in the current museum De Katoendrukkerij (The Cotten Printery), which has been located in the former water mill De Volmolen since 2020.
Would you like to try cotton printing yourself or arrange a guided tour? Then contact the printery to make an appointment.
De Volmolen itself is also a monument in its own right: the national monument has fulfilled various roles since it was built in 1645, but it was originally built for the textile industry. The mill was used to process woven wool into clothing.
