On board a ship, it was not always easy to protect your booty. Sometimes it was better to hide your treasure somewhere. This is what the Muslim-converted privateer Jan Janszoon van Haarlem, also known as Murâd Re'ís, Admiral of Saléeen must have probably thought when he buried more than a thousand gold coins at this spot in Serooskerke around 1623.
Like Michiel de Ruyter at the same time, he was a privateer. In November 1623, he sailed into Veere harbour with a small fleet. After walking around the area, he decided that his treasure was safe here.
In 1966, the treasure was found while harvesting leeks. The finders had to share the loot with the municipality of Serooskerke, which owned the land. The proceeds amounted to 750,000 guilders. With the money, the municipality built a swimming pool aptly named ‘De Goudvijver’ near the site of the find.
