The house served as a residence for Belgian customs officers who monitored border traffic. Smugglers lived nearby and kept a close eye on the customs officers. One smuggler noticed during his cycle routes when the customs officers were at home and when their dark blue Volkswagen Beetles were out and about. He discovered their duty roster and used this knowledge to safely plan his smuggling activities.
