The Crow's Foot Monument (1985) was designed by Ad Wouters and Jan van den Dungen. It recalls the smuggling era in this region. The name ‘The Crow's Foot’, as stated on the metal sign, refers to the tactics smugglers used to shake off customs officials. The smugglers spread the crow's feet across the road via ingenious pipe systems under their car. It was made so that there was always a point facing upwards, guaranteed to cause punctures to pursuing customs officers.
Around 1960, a free trade market emerged within the EEC, the precursor to the EU. With that, smuggling came to an end. Until then, smugglers used fast cars to transport their illegal goods and dangerous chases by customs regularly took place.
