Frank Cooper was a successful businessman in America in the 19th century, but did you know that his real name was Folkert Harmens Kuipers (1843-1904)? He came from Akkrum. In 1900 he had Coopersburg, a home for the poor elderly, built in his birthplace. When Kuipers died, a mausoleum was built for him and his wife in the garden of the home. The mausoleum was designed by sculptor Johann Hinrich Schröder. The buildings are beautifully decorated with sculptures; for example, Frank Cooper and his wife Netty de Graaff are also depicted in the stone of the mausoleum.
Coopersburg and its mausoleum have been a national monument since 2000. The garden is freely accessible and maintained by volunteers.
