Bovendonk has a long history: the land on which this building stands was donated in 1282 by Arnoud van Leuven, lord of Breda, to St Bernard's Abbey in Hemiksem, near Antwerp. The monks built an outpost here and started reclaiming the surrounding, lower grounds, including for peat extraction. The port of Oudenbosch in 1300 was also one of their projects.
After turbulent times, wars and changes of owners in 1892, the diocese of Breda bought the land in Hoeven, in 1895 Pierre Cuypers was commissioned to build a seminary here. Still today, part of the building is used for a part-time training of priests and deacons. However, the building is mainly used as a hotel and conference centre. Both for weekend breaks and business meetings, this imposing, atmospheric building is a fantastic place.
