The monument in the general cemetery on Kapelseweg in Kloetinge, which is also the grave of Canadian soldier Jean-Maurice Dicaire, commemorates residents who died during the occupation years due to acts of war. It is a tangible reminder of the sacrifices of both local citizens and liberators.
Jean-Maurice Dicaire, the youngest of 13 children from a family that eventually settled in Montreal from Quebec, lied about his age to enlist in the Canadian Régiment de Maisonneuve at the age of 17. During battle, he was fatally hit by a German mortar on 29 October 1944. His brave contribution to the liberation of the Netherlands is honoured by this memorial in Kloetinge.
The grave and monument is located on the grounds of the General Cemetery of Kloetinge, but can be viewed from the public road (from the Kapelseweg).
