The Commiezenhut used to serve as a lookout post for border hunters who monitored and arrested smugglers. The huts were partly underground to be less conspicuous and provided shelter during cold nights. Smugglers, however, had their own tricks to avoid these border hunters. For instance, they could tell by the position of the curtains of a nearby café whether border hunters were around.
The Frontier Hunters Corps, founded in 1814, consisted of retired soldiers and was deployed to fight smuggling along the borders. During World War I, these border hunters were replaced by soldiers and later by customs officers.
The commander's hut can still be seen, but you'll have to look carefully for it!
