Coevorden is the oldest city in Drenthe, located in the south-eastern corner of the province. Indeed, as early as the Middle Ages, Coevorden was granted city rights, obtained from the bishop of Utrecht. The city then lay on an important trade route between the German Rhineland with the Hanseatic city of Groningen and the port of Stavoren in Friesland. Thanks to these developments, there is therefore much to tell about Coevorden and its surroundings.
The museum is housed in a beautiful historic building. In the museum you will hear personal stories from residents of the fortified town of Coevorden, see local artworks and many traces of history. You will also learn about the IJzerkoekoproer, a popular uprising in response to the ban on iron cakes, the local delicacies baked in cast-iron baking trays.
