In the smallest Elfsteden town of Sloten in Friesland, the past is kept alive with the Clotheslines of Sloten. The sight is a tribute to the former washing and bleaching of white linen sheets. Sheets used to be washed in the moat and then laid out to dry and bleach on the grass banks: the bleaching meadows. This made the sheets whiter and smelled fresh again.
Today, this tradition is symbolised by white sheets blowing on washing lines on the outskirts of town in summer, just outside the fortress. This open area has enough space and wind to dry laundry, something not possible in the compact centre of Sloten.
This charming and photogenic sight immerses visitors in nostalgia and offers a unique experience reminiscent of days gone by. Especially during events, the little town comes alive, and the clotheslines provide an atmospheric backdrop for beautiful photos and authentic moments.
