On the occasion of the 700th birthday of the city of Harderwijk in 1931, the city received a collection of antiquities as a gift. The collection was housed in the Overveluwsche Oudheidkamer in the Town Hall on the Markt. In 1950, the current premises were converted into a museum and the collection moved to the premises on the Donkerstraat.
Over the years, the museum has increasingly focused on a collection that tells the special history of Harderwijk. In recent years, the building has been substantially renovated. The historic exterior has been restored, and inside the various rooms have been furnished for the best experience. There is a Culture Café with a beautiful light conservatory.
The permanent presentation on the city's history can be admired throughout the year. In addition, the museum presents two changing art exhibitions per year and a new exhibition by a local artist every six weeks.
