The love for the craft and the past of chocolate, has ensured that plenty of Arretjescake is made in Zutphen. Originally a primal Dutch recipe with dark chocolate, but at Magdalena they know how to create their own surprising variations of it.
Feel free to drop by to see how the chocolatiers come up with their delicious and creative creations. They are happy to tell you all about it and lovingly demonstrate their passion for the craft.
What is Arretjescake?
To make this cake, you don't even have to bake. The typically Dutch recipe originally consists of butter, egg or milk, biscuits and (melted) chocolate. Mix it all together, leave it to set in the fridge and then you are good to go. The basic recipe became nationally known thanks to the cartoon character Arretje Nof, from the series of books published in 1926 by the Nederlandse Olie Fabriek (translated: the Dutch Oil Factory, abbreviated the N.O.F. and predecessor of today's Calvé) for advertising purposes.
