The Chapel of Saint Louis was a boarding school for boys for more than a century. The chapel was founded in 1840 when Willem Hellemons from Roosendaal established a monastic order to educate the youth of Oudenbosch. The order was first established in a small house on Kaaistraat, but after it moved to a large building on the Markt, more and more young people from outside Oudenbosch also came to the monastery order. This is how the boys' boarding school “Institute Saint Louis” came into being.
Shortly afterwards, the building was expanded with the addition of the Maria building, Vincentius building and Aloysius building. A playground was built between the buildings. Finally, in 1865, the chapel was built, but it had to wait until 1889 before it received its characteristic dome. The chapel was dedicated to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (Luigi Gonzaga, 1568-1591), a young Catholic who died at a young age.
In 1976, the chapel was designated a national monument.
