On the edge of Museumpark are six monumental villas in the same style as UNESCO World Heritage Site Van Nelle Factory; the Nieuwe Bouwen. They were built from the 1930s to the mid-1960s. Their construction was meant to bind wealthy citizens to Rotterdam, which saw its wealthy inhabitants leave for places like The Hague and Wassenaar.
Since 1993, the Chabot Museum has been housed in one of these villas, built in 1938 by architects Baas and Stokla. Before that, Baas worked for many years at architecture firm Brinkman & Van der Vlugt. This firm, known for the Van Nelle Factory, Sonneveld House and Feijenoord Stadium, among others, also made the study for this villa park.
At the Chabot Museum of International Expressionism, you will experience art in the bright, open spaces of one of Rotterdam's most beautiful villas. Face to face with the monumental works of Henk Chabot (1894-1949), his contemporaries and contemporary kindred spirits. An intimate, world-class art experience.
Every weekend, the Chabot Museum organises guided tours in the Van Nelle Factory. Discover these pearls of the New Building in 'With Chabot to Van Nelle'.
