The name Schaloen has been written in different ways over the centuries and has several meanings. The most obvious one seems to be a derivation of schalien, which means slate. Schaloen could then be translated as House with slates. The lands around the house and the whole area up to Valkenburg belong to Schaloen. Even the castle Valkenburg, the present ruin, belongs to the Van Hulsberg family.
With its origins in the 14th century, and after several alterations and restorations, the house only acquires its current appearance in 1894. Pierre Cuypers carries out a restoration commissioned by the De Villers Masbourg d'Eclaye family of Hulsberg. It becomes a rectangular house in neo-Gothic style with a tower, staircase and raised arches.
