This castle already existed in 1392, of which only part of the outer wall remains today. In that year a chapel was built on top of the castle. The castle initially consisted of a keep with a residential wing and a walled courtyard. Later it was expanded with several residential wings and an outer bailey. A large gatehouse was also built.
In 1672, the French blew up the castle, and only the gate and the residential wing survived. The castle was rebuilt, but to no avail: in 1794/1795, the French occupied the castle and left little of it behind.
Slowly but surely, more and more of the castle was demolished, until only a gate and a wall section remained. These have been restored and are now National Monuments. In the wall is a panel, made entirely in the old atmosphere, showing how the grounds looked when Castle Van Bokhoven was still glorious. In the grounds you can still see the course of the moats.
