A water mill has stood on this site since 1387. It was once part of a network of 20 mills leased by the owners of the castle. The Cannenburger Watermill had been leased by the Koekkoek family since 1727, and later bought by Gerrit 'Gait' te Riele at an auction in 1872. With that, it was officially no longer part of the castle. The mill has since been owned by the fifth generation of Te Riele.
After a devastating fire in 1940, the mill was rebuilt in stone and as a turbine mill. The mill was used daily until 1978, until electric drive was introduced.
The mill building then underwent a transformation into a modern business specialising in the manufacture and overhaul of milling machinery. In 2010, the mill underwent a major restoration, during which the turbine was overhauled and a top-stroke wheel was added. Despite its water capacity being reduced over the years, the turbine is still running daily today.
