Buurserzand is a unique nature reserve. Its name suggests otherwise, but it is in fact a particularly wet area. Vast heathlands are interspersed with juniper bushes that are more than a century and a half old. The ploughing down of heath creates new nature with bone broom, bell gentian and sundew. Excellent habitat for the green woodpecker, which likes to snack on ants, fruits and seeds. At the edge are hayfields that are mowed late, giving herbs and grasses plenty of opportunity to form seeds that benefit butterflies, birds and small mammals. And chicks of meadow birds have more time to grow up. The photo was taken for Natuurmonumenten by Ronald Kamphuis.
