The history of Buitenplaats het Munnikenhof in Grijpskerke clearly shows how rich people could become from sea trade. The country house was founded in the 13th century by monks of the Norbertine Abbey of Middelburg. In 1575, Balthasar de Moucheron bought the country house. He was co-founder of the Veerse Compagnie and the later VOC.
Later, Frederik van Roubergen followed suit. He bought the grounds from Jacob Cats in 1623. The plantation owner and slave trader was brimming with money. He expanded the estate considerably.
Michiel de Ruyter also managed to amass wealth by trading during his sea voyages. Yet he remained a simple man. Around 1650, he bought a property at Nieuwstraat 13 in Vlissingen.
Today, the castle is a B&B.
