Back in the 1980s, Arnhem wanted to replace its railway station with a new and larger one. Architect Teun Koolhaas made a design in 1992, which was rejected by the people of Arnhem because it required the removal of many homes.
Ben van Berkel became the new architect. After eight years, it turned out that the budgeted construction costs of €65 million were exceeded by more than €25 million. The design also proved extremely difficult to execute. According to the schedule, the building should have been finished in early 2009, eventually it was festively opened on 19 November 2015.
