Brusea - Bruinisse

N 51.6633809 / E 4.096856

In Bruinisse, you will find no less than two museums together in one place: the Vissersuusje (monumental fisherman's cottage) and the Visserijmuseum are together the Brusea. The museums focus on Bruinisse's history, a history of over 550 years! Of course, there is plenty to tell about that.

Walk through the timeline of stories, full of peaks and troughs. There was prosperity thanks to the trade and export of mussels, which made Bruinisse known as the mussel village of Zeeland. But brutal wars and disasters, such as the 1953 flood disaster, also made for miserable periods.

The Fisheries Museum introduces you to the age-old traditions in mussel farming and fishing. It shows how hard work was done and how fishermen kept trying to innovate their equipment. A number of exhibits tell of heroic rescues at sea and of the 1911 storm disaster, where more than a hundred Bruinissen fishing boats were lost.

The Vissersuusje is the oldest building in the village: it dates from 1860 and is still in its original state. As soon as you step inside, you go back in time for more than a century. It shows how people lived here in earlier times and how they knew how to use every inch of this small house. Recommendation for children: dress up in ancient nightgowns and try out the box bed!

Brusea is a fascinating outing for young and old: nostalgic and educational. The museum also offers a fun adventure for the little ones. Extra plus: you are allowed to touch almost everything there!
