The Broadcast tower in Hilversum is a landmark that embodies the rich history of Dutch media. With its imposing height of 196 metres, it towers over the Media Park and beams proudly over the media city. The current tower, built in 1973 to the design of Jan H. van der Zee and A. Auer, was additionally rigged in 2001 to meet the growing need for digital television. It is a sturdy structure of concrete and steel, which has since provided a home for numerous antennas and even a data centre.
Besides its technical role, the Broadcast tower is also a beloved piece of Hilversum history. In 2013, the tower was even given a cheery touch when a giant logo of the programme ‘Man bijt hond’ was unveiled as a tribute to the show. It is this mix of technology and culture that makes the tower so special.
