In 1190, Godevaart, lord of Breda, already had a castle that probably consisted of a round keep with battlements and a weather wall. In 1350, Jan van Polanen built a new castle with four heavy towers. When the castle came into the possession of the Van Nassaus, they converted it into a real palace in the 16th century. It was the official residence of William of Orange.
In 1686, most of the palace was demolished and replaced by new buildings. In 1826, King William I decided to furnish the castle as a Military Academy, which was accompanied by new renovations. Today, Breda Castle is still used as a military site and therefore has limited access. Walls from the Middle Ages can still be found in the basement.
