In 1856, a mill was built on the Braak, where the name Braakmolen comes from. This was actually a relocation of a mill erected in 1842 along the road from Goor to Diepenheim. Another mill in Goor was demolished, and its hull was used to build the new one. The cap of the mill also came from another demolished mill, namely the mill of Castle Scherpenzeel on the Markeloseweg. However, this cap proved slightly too small for the hull, which gave the mill its unique character.
With the rise of the steam engine and later electric power, many mills, including the Braakmolen, came into disrepair. In 1923, the mill was shut down, with only a brief revival in 1933 when it milled so-called government rye. Meanwhile, the mill was falling heavily into disrepair, while all other mills in the immediate area had already disappeared.
The municipality of Goor decided to preserve this last mill. Thanks to financial support from the state and the province, as well as contributions from the community of Goor, the mill was restored and recommissioned in 1951. Today, the mill is owned by the organisation De Hollandsche Molen. Since mid-2014, the mill has been regularly grinding fodder for a local farmer.
