Botjes Zandgat - Zuidbroek

N 53.180994711146 / E 6.8516394886287

Botjes Zandgat near Zuidbroek is the deepest sand excavation in the Netherlands, with a maximum depth of approximately 40 metres and a permitted excavation depth of up to 60 metres. The lake owes its name to Feiko Botjes, a farmer who owned land in this area at the beginning of the 20th century, known at the time as Uiterburenboven. Even then, small-scale sand extraction was already taking place, for example for the construction of the railway line between Zuidbroek and Delfzijl in 1907. From the 1950s onwards, sand extraction grew strongly and the white sand was mainly used in construction.

Today, Botjes Zandgat is a popular recreational area. In 2011, Botjes Zwembaai (Botjes Swimming Bay) was opened, a safe swimming area with a shallow beach. The deep part remains popular with divers because of the clarity of the water. Sand martins breed along the banks and the area is attractive for walkers.

Sand extraction is still ongoing, but there are plans to further develop the area in the future. More recreational facilities are being considered, such as floating houses and play dunes, with attention to nature conservation. This way, Botjes Zandgat will not only remain a place for sand extraction, but also a special location for relaxation and experiencing nature.
