From photogenic Volendam, Rederij Volendam Marken Express takes you to the peninsula of Marken, a place that is perhaps even more photogenic! Until 1957, this was an isolated island: first in the Zuiderzee, then in the IJsselmeer. In the thirteenth century, the island was first inhabited by monks from Friesland. The sea regularly flowed over the island, which made for extremely fertile soil. The inhabitants could therefore make a living from agriculture and cattle breeding. Later, the population also lived from fishing, but agriculture remained the main source of income.
Nowadays, Marken is connected to the mainland by a dam, making it officially a peninsula. The waters have changed too: Marken is now surrounded by the Gouwzee and the Markermeer. But the old Dutch atmosphere is still visible in every fibre of the distinctive wooden and green houses and small streets. Visit one of the many stalls for fresh fish. For lunch or dinner you can go to the authentic Taverne. The highlight is definitely the beautiful lighthouse the Horse of Marken!
