The Black Lake lies between Flevoland and Overijssel. The construction of the Northeast Polder in 1940 created this lake. The lake is fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of two metres except for the channel. Many different birds live in the reed beds on the shore, such as the rare bittern, marsh harrier and purple heron.
The lake is also home to the real Bird Island.
