Birdwatching Tower Burgumer Mar - Eastermar

If you’re looking to hop off your bike and let nature take the lead, the Burgumer Mar offers a perfect moment of calm. At the edge of this expansive Frisian lake, in a landscape of reed beds and wetlands, a wooden observation tower stands slightly elevated above the terrain. It may look simple, but the view is grand: wide, open, and still.

From here, you can look out over the Burgumer Mar, a freshwater lake known for its abundance of birdlife. In spring, you might hear the booming call of the elusive bittern hidden in the reeds. Bearded tits, great egrets and reed warblers are also frequent visitors. During migration periods, you may even spot black terns, smews or a passing osprey.

The tower is part of a wider network of lookout points around the lake and was built thanks to local collaboration. Its slightly raised location offers panoramic views of land and water — the perfect place to pause and take in whatever takes flight, lands, or simply sits still.

Whether you’re a keen birder or just enjoy doing absolutely nothing for a while: this is one of those places where you can quietly soak up the landscape.
