At the edge of Lake Tjeukemeer stands a small pumping station. This old hydraulic wonder once guarded the region's water management. Around 1904, windmills took care of dry feet here, later this pumping station took over. It kept the land dry and the water level under control. An indispensable link in a time when water seemed to rule.
But times changed. The pumping station lost its function and fell into disrepair. A sad sight, until volunteers rolled up their sleeves. They breathed new life into the pumping station. No more technology, but an ode to nature. Now it is a unique bird-watching cabin with spectacular views. In 2018, it even received the ‘Lemster Bokking’ for its beautiful restoration. An award it deserves.
Cycle along the dyke, along the water and discover this piece of history. Stand still, look out over the Tjeukemeer and watch the birds bobbing on the water.
