In 1583, there is already a mill in the hamlet Besmanninck, as the area was called then. In 1861 the mill burned down and the present mill was built as its successor in 1862. It was a beautiful belter mill. In 1954, the miller started grinding electrically and the windmill fell into disrepair. In addition, the moor around the windmill became woodland and the windmill was almost completely hidden from view. In 1977, the municipality of Ommen bought the windmill and it was gradually restored. In 1988, it was decided to turn the mill into an information centre for nature, the environment, the landscape and recreation. Not only was the restoration of the mill completed in 1995, but the environment - the mill's biotope - was also considerably improved, allowing the sails to turn regularly once more.
