You may know the Dutch children's song; ‘Berend Botje went out sailing with his little ship to Zuidlaren...’. A statue of Berend Botje can be seen in the town centre. But who exactly is this Berend Botje? Many Drents say it is the sea hero Lodewijk van Heiden. The children's song is said to have originated in 1832 when he returned to his home province. Here he stayed for a while on his estate Laarwoud. At the time, people regularly saw him sailing on the Zuidlaardermeer. He just couldn't really ground himself in Drenthe and left for America, as the children's song also mentions.
