Previously, at the site of the current mill (the hamlet of IJzevoorde) there was a ground-sailer, built by B. Vels in 1856. Around 1920, this mill was demolished due to dilapidation. Using the octagon of a mill in Zelhem and parts of the original mill, the current mill was built in 1921.
The mill, with perhaps 5,000 shales (wooden nailed boards) on the outside, was named Velsmolen. An extensive restoration was completed in 1980, during which the name was changed to Benninkmolen, after a generation of millers who owned the mill.
Today, the mill, with two millstones, is run by volunteers. There is also a shop where you can buy products from the mill. When the mill is open, so is the mill shop.
