On the Amersfoortse Berg stands the Belgenmonument. Belgium donated this monument in gratitude for the help offered by the Netherlands to Belgian refugees during the First World War. The building was designed by the Belgian architect Huib Hoste. It was then built by Belgian soldiers who were interned in the Netherlands during the First World War as a work and education project. In 1938, two plaques were attached expressing gratitude in Dutch and French.
The monument is the largest in the Netherlands. Around the building is a garden entirely in the atmosphere of the architecture and the character of the monument building. The garden was designed by the Belgian garden architect Louis van der Swaelmen.
Visit the building from the inside with a guided tour.
