Bargerveen, located in the municipality of Emmen, province of Drenthe, is a vast 2,100-hectare nature reserve managed by Staatsbosbeheer. This raised bog area, the last remnant of the former Bourtang swamp, consists of three parts: Meerstalblok in the north, Amsterdamsche Veld in the middle, and Schoonebeekerveld in the south. After the end of peat extraction in 1992, the area became the property of the Forestry Commission, with Amsterdamsche Veld as a nature reserve.
The nature reserve is home to diverse flora and fauna, including special plant species and animals such as vipers, viviparous lizards and various bird species.
