This is a very special location: a water mill right in the centre of Maastricht. The water mill is located on the Jeker, a 55-kilometre-long river that runs straight through Maastricht. The mill was already mentioned in the 11th century, but since the 15th century it was owned by The Guild of Brewers. At that time, malt was milled from germinated barley grains for the breweries in the region. The water mill and wheel are open to the public every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm.
The rest of the month, you can visit the bakery that is currently located in the premises. At this bakery, you can enjoy the tastiest products from the Limburg countryside in the tasting room. They are grown, ground and baked with respect for people and the environment. There is a small B&B (Bakker&Bed), where you can stay overnight. But at the Bisschopsmolen, you can also participate in various workshops or book a guided tour.
For example, there is the Flan Baking Workshop, where you learn to make your own traditional flan with a lid or diamond pattern. Once your flan is in the oven, enjoy a nice cup of coffee with a piece of real Limburg flan.
During the tour of the mill and the bakery, the Bisschopsmolen bakers will tell you all about the raw materials they use every day and follow the process from field to baker. Of course, the tour also includes tasting one of those delicious pieces of Limburg flan. You can register for these activities on the Bisschopsmolen website.
