In 2000, in honour of the 65th anniversary of pharmacy De Vriendschap, pharmacists A.J.M. van den Berg, E.P. Otten and H.J. Otten had two modern yawners designed by artist Willem Kind. These sculptures, with references to the history of pharmacy starting in 1935 in the then Dutch East Indies, are a contemporary interpretation of the traditional yawner, a symbol associated with the pharmacy world.

Willem Kind was known for his work with stainless steel, where his welding technique and visible welds were an important part of the design. Each work bears the marks of his craft and testifies to his innovative approach to material use. He made a national as well as international name for himself with his figurative sculptures. Among his best-known works are the ‘Kop van Borger’ and the sculpture ‘The Canal Diggers’ in Erica. Much of his art can be found in private collections.
